#002 How penguins inspire a child with dyslexia to read and write

This week Rebecca shares the inspiration behind the P.I. Penguin series she co-authors with her two children, Joshua (who has both dyslexia and autism) and Kaylie. The fascinating thing is P.I. Penguin started as a homeschool project to motivate Joshua to give books and storytelling a chance. That first book evolved into a dream to produce the kinds of stories that will inspire even the most resistant readers to love books. There is so much more thought and reasoning behind various decisions about the book series. It shows Rebecca really took a strategic approach to finding ways to engage and inspire Joshua. And that putting the creative power into the hands of a dyslexic child can be a catalyst to incredible literacy development and the start of something truly magical. Take a listen!

If you’d like to check out the P.I. Penguin series, it’s available from the Aulexic website: https://www.aulexic.com.au/pi-series

In the show, Rebecca and Nanci also talk about an upcoming local event here in Perth, Western Australia. It’s happening at the State Library of Western Australia in the Perth Cultural Centre on Saturday, January 21st 2017. There will be fabulous children’s authors and illustrators performing across the day. If you specifically want to catch Rebecca’s talk and have a chance to say, “Hi!” to her in person (please let her know you listened to the podcast!) she’s performing as Bec J. Smith at 1pm.
